How Has Human Nutrition Evolved?

Throughout history there have been important changes in the way humans eat . In the following informative article we explain the evolution that this section has experienced in its different eras:

  • Prehistory (2.5 million years BC-4th century BC) : At first, food was consumed uncooked. The diet consisted of fruits, roots, seeds, insects, larvae, and carrion. With the discovery of fire, food began to be cooked, an advance that allowed for improved nutrient assimilation. The diets of this period were mainly insects, worms, mollusks, fish, small game, eggs, and honey. In the Neolithic, agriculture and livestock farming appeared, which meant a radical change with the appearance of an omnivorous diet, made up of vegetables, fruits, cereals such as wheat and barley, meat, and fish.

  • Ancient Age (5th century BC - 4th century AD) : During this period, cereal crops were prominent, including millet, barley, oats and rye. The consumption of legumes and vegetables should also be mentioned. In terms of meat, humans opted for domesticated animals such as cows, sheep, goats, oxen and geese.

  • Middle Ages (5th-15th centuries) : Bread was the star food of the time, with breads made from rye, barley, buckwheat, millet and oats being popular. As for meat, pork was the most consumed by the lower classes, as hunting was reserved for the upper classes. On the other hand, potatoes, legumes, green beans, cocoa, tomatoes, peppers, strawberries and corn were other foods consumed.

  • Modern Age (16th-18th centuries) : Commonly consumed foods included oils, legumes, beef, chicken, pears, apples, pineapple, onions, turnips, cabbage, tomatoes, potatoes, garlic and cheese. Bread continued to be very important in diets, and other foods considered 'stars' of the period were rice and corn.

  • Contemporary Age (19th century to the present) : The industrialisation of food allows food to be produced on a large scale. Flour, oils, jams, butter and cheese are produced in factories. During this period, more efficient methods for preserving food are also discovered in the form of preserves and frozen products (fruit, vegetables, meat, fish). It is also the era of ready-made meals and the emergence of fast food.
