Complete Guide to the Coronavirus Outbreak

Guía Completa del Brote de Coronavirus

By now you've probably heard a thing or two about the Coronavirus . We know that the first outbreak of the virus took place in the Wuhan area of China , and it has now spread to 52 other countries.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) data, there are 88,948 infected people and 48,168 people have recovered. At the time of writing this article, 2,915 people have died according to WHO ( World Health Organization ), March 1, 2020 [1].

Since health is an important topic for us (and for you too!) we decided to dedicate an article to the topic. We will focus on what symptoms belong to the coronavirus, what its current status is and how you can prevent the virus from spreading. We will also address how the virus is currently affecting us as a company.

What are coronaviruses?

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause diseases; ranging from the common cold to more dangerous conditions such as severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS. Some coronaviruses can only affect animals, but others can also affect humans. There are several different types of human coronaviruses , including coronavirus disease 2019, or COVID-19 for short. The name comes from the crown-like spikes that protrude from the surface of the virus [2].

According to WHO, respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath, and breathing difficulties are common signs of COVID-19 infection. In more severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and even death. There is currently no vaccine to prevent COVID-19. However, it is possible to recover from it. [3]

What is the current status?

The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised its risk assessment to Very High globally and is avoiding using the word Pandemic to describe today’s crisis, and instead, they are talking about ‘epidemics in different parts of the world’. While this doesn’t sound very relaxing, there’s no need to freak out. According to WHO, the spread of the virus outside of China is concerning, but not an unexpected development. According to preliminary research, the coronavirus (COVID-19) is infectious and it is estimated that each infected person could spread it to between 1.5 and 3.5 people without effective containment measures.

However, experts say there is no reason to panic. [3] For example, UCLA epidemiologist Jeffrey Klausner said; “It is possible to suddenly say we’re going to have 20 or 30 cases from a particular place. People should expect that, but they shouldn’t worry too much about it. If we were testing everyone for the common cold, we would find hundreds of thousands of cases.” [4] [5] Health workers around the world are conducting contact tracing on confirmed cases. Meaning they will test people with symptoms from any of the regions where it is known to have spread or anyone who has been in contact with someone who tested positive. This is expected to significantly decrease the infectivity of the virus.

Is there a cure for COVID-19?

Scientists around the world are testing interventions with some success.
China ’s National Medical Products Administration has approved the use of Favilavir for clinical trials. Flavilavir has shown efficacy in treating the disease with minimal side effects in a clinical trial involving 70 patients. Approximately 20 pharmaceutical companies are working on antivirals to treat the contagious coronavirus infection [6]. Because it is important and difficult to prove efficacy and safety, a cure may not be released for the global market within this year.

How to prevent the spread?

At this time, there are no vaccines to prevent human coronavirus infections. However, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, you can reduce your risk of getting or spreading an infection by:

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoid touching your face, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with sick people.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces (e.g. phone screen, laptop, wallet)
  • To avoid using cash, use a debit card instead.
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue. Then throw away the tissue and wash your hands.
  • Staying home when sick [2]
